Rural Retreat, VA

Rural Retreat is a Wythe County town in the Southwest Virginia Highlands, with the Blue Ridge and farm country close around it. The 2020 census counted 1,546 residents. It began under the name Mount Airy, then changed names when mail confusion with other Mount Airys became a problem. The railroad arrived in 1856, and the town grew into an agricultural shipping point; by the early twentieth century, its cabbage market was famous enough to earn the "cabbage center of the world" label. There is a little Dr. Pepper lore here too: local history connects pharmacist Charles Taylor Pepper's medicinal remedy to the drink that later carried his name elsewhere.

Today the restored circa-1870 Rural Retreat Depot is the town's clearest reminder of how rail and farming worked together. Passenger service lasted into the early 1970s, and freight continued until around 1965; after a 2014 restoration, the depot reopened as a museum and meeting space. Heritage Park, Rural Retreat Lake, and the community fairgrounds add more current landmarks, while I-81 and I-77 connect the town to Wytheville and the wider Southwest Virginia map. Rural Retreat feels shaped by two long habits: growing things in the valley and finding a way to ship them out.
