About Rural Valley

Rural Valley is an Armstrong County borough organized around Pennsylvania Route 85 and Cowanshannock Creek. Route 85 leads twelve miles west to Kittanning and fourteen miles east to U.S. 119 at Home, while the creek flows west toward the Allegheny River. Recent road work makes that geography tangible: PennDOT undertook the South Water Street bridge replacement over Cowanshannock Creek in 2024 and scheduled paving and shoulder work on Route 85 in 2026. The borough had 826 residents in the 2020 census.

The creek also shapes the area's recreation and conservation network. The Cowanshannock Watershed Association, based in Rural Valley, works on water quality and points residents toward the Bernard C. Snyder Picnic Area, where the creek meets the Allegheny near a boat launch, picnic space, and fishing access. The Great Shamokin Path follows an abandoned railroad corridor along the creek. Borough council meets monthly in the borough building, giving Rural Valley a civic center alongside its road, water, and trail corridors.
