Russian Mission, AK

Set along the banks of the Yukon River in western Alaska, Russian Mission is a small, tight-knit community with deep roots in the delta. Originally known as the village of Ikogmiut, the settlement grew around a nineteenth-century fur post and Russian Orthodox mission. Today, it remains a quiet riverside home where Yup'ik heritage and local history shape everyday life.

Like much of rural Alaska, daily living follows the rhythm of the seasons. There are no roads into town, so small planes bring in passengers, mail, and groceries year-round, while boats and snowmachines take over on the Yukon River depending on the weather. The local K-12 school serves as the primary gathering spot for families, and subsistence traditions like salmon fishing, hunting, and berry picking remain central to the community.
