Rustburg, VA

Rustburg is the Campbell County seat in central Virginia, a census-designated place where U.S. 501 and Virginia 24 meet on the way to Lynchburg, Concord, and Brookneal. The 2020 census counted 1,585 residents. Jeremiah Rust donated 50 acres for the county seat in 1784, which gives the place its basic shape even now: courthouse, county offices, schools, and the roads that bring people in from the surrounding countryside. The county seat role is still the reason people from across Campbell County pass through.

Main Street and Courthouse Square carry the visual history. The old Campbell County Courthouse served from 1848 to 1991 and now houses a museum with restored courtroom details and local exhibits. Rustburg High School, the county technical center, and the nearby Long Mountain overlook give the place a mix of county-business, school, and hill-country identities.
