Rutland, OH

Rutland is a village in Meigs County, Ohio, founded in 1799 and incorporated in 1913. It sits in a wide valley along Little Leading Creek, within the Appalachian Plateau landscape of southeastern Ohio. The creek has shaped the local map for generations; an 1909 county newspaper account described a major flood spreading through the valley and over the normally modest stream. The surrounding hills also carried coal seams that supported mining through the early and middle twentieth century, adding an industrial layer to a place first built around farms and livestock.

School history gives Rutland another lasting reference. Rutland High School operated before the village became part of the consolidated Meigs Local School District, and its teams were known as the Rutland Red Devils. The old high school name still appears in yearbooks and local records, linking several generations to the village's center. Rutland's municipal map is small, but its history reaches across the creek, the hills, the coal seams, and the school building. It is an Ohio village with a long founding date, a distinct valley setting, and a school tradition that carried the place name well beyond Meigs County.
