Sacramento’s early history was shaped by the Gold Rush and the rivers that surround it. After massive floods in the early 1860s, the young city solved the problem by literally raising itself up, elevating entire streets and buildings over a dozen feet out of the mud. Today, visitors can still take guided tours through those subterranean spaces beneath the wooden boardwalks of Old Sacramento. Sitting right where the Sacramento and American rivers meet, the historic riverfront district preserves dozens of Gold Rush-era buildings right alongside modern downtown.

Sacramento easily earns its reputation as the City of Trees, which becomes a huge plus during warm valley summers. Neighborhoods like East Sacramento, Land Park, Curtis Park, and Midtown are shaded by massive, mature tree canopies that make strolling around a genuine pleasure. Midtown functions as the neighborhood hub for dining and entertainment, pairing quiet residential streets with local coffee spots, craft breweries, and art galleries. Its popular Saturday farmers market runs every weekend rain or shine, while regular art walks bring live music and food vendors into the streets.

State government forms the backbone of the local economy, keeping the downtown core buzzing with activity during normal business hours. Major healthcare networks like UC Davis Health and large universities like Sacramento State provide tens of thousands of additional jobs across the metro area. When the workday ends, outdoor life revolves around the water. The American River Parkway features a paved multi-use trail running more than thirty miles all the way out to Folsom Lake, drawing plenty of runners, cyclists, kayakers, and summer rafters.

Getting around town depends a lot on where you live. The central grid is flat and very easy to navigate on foot or by bike, and the regional light-rail system connects downtown directly to outer communities like Folsom and Rancho Cordova. New stations and transit projects tied to the downtown Railyards redevelopment continue to expand those options. Still, because the region covers a wide footprint, most residents rely on a car for daily commutes, grocery runs, and quick weekend getaways to Lake Tahoe or wine country.
