About Salamonia

Salamonia is a town in Madison Township, Jay County, Indiana, United States. The 2020 census counted 151 residents. The town is situated along the Salamonie River, near its headwaters in Northern Indiana. Salamonia was originally called Lancaster, and under the latter name was platted in 1839. The short version is that Salamonia carries an earlier story into the places people know and use now. That is the local read on Salamonia: its past remains attached to the places people use now. When the first post office was established there, it was discovered there was another Lancaster, Indiana, and the town was renamed Salamonia, in order to avoid repetition.
