Salem, NC

Salem is a Burke County census-designated place in central Burke County, directly south of Morganton. The 2020 census counted 2,356 residents. The place is best understood as Morganton’s southern rural edge, with Salem Road tying the community to the county seat and the surrounding farm roads. Salem Elementary and Robert Logan Patton High School serve the local school map, while Gilboa Methodist Church gives the area a much older landmark. Gilboa Methodist Church was built in 1879 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984; its frame building, stone-pier foundation, and cemetery still sit in a wooded setting near the road.

Its churchyard keeps the old crossroads visible from Salem Road. The wooded churchyard remains the clearest local landmark. Morganton handles the larger errands and county institutions, but Salem keeps its own school, church, and crossroads identity.
