About Salem
Salem is a Richardson County village laid out in 1855 as Nebraska Territory opened for settlement. Its name comes from the Hebrew shalom, meaning peace; the town was briefly central to the county-seat struggle before Falls City prevailed. Richardson County's own history records Salem among the early precincts and places the county's first permanent settlement in the same 1855 period. Falls City Public Schools serves Salem, while the village remains in the county's southeastern farm and river landscape.
