Salt Point, NY

Salt Point is a hamlet and census-designated place in the Town of Pleasant Valley, Dutchess County, along the Salt Point Turnpike. Its older land story reaches back to the Great Nine Partners Patent, granted in 1697; the hamlet's site fell within Great Lot No. 6 when that larger tract was divided in 1734. The local plan describes Salt Point as a compact hamlet core beside actively farmed land, with the store and post office serving as a central feature. That combination of old buildings, a working road, and nearby fields gives the place a clear Hudson Valley outline.

Railroad and volunteer service add another layer. The railroad's arrival in the nineteenth century brought summer visitors to the Pleasant Valley area, while the Salt Point Volunteer Fire Company was organized after residents petitioned for a dedicated company in 1946. Its first meeting was held in June 1947 in the old P&E Railroad Station on Cottage Street. Salt Point's story lives in those small connections: a turnpike through a patent-era landscape, a post office at the hamlet's center, and a former station repurposed for local service.
