Salton Sea Beach, CA

Salton Sea Beach is a tiny, quiet community tucked along the western edge of the Salton Sea in Imperial County. Home to around 500 people, it sits right off Highway 86 between Salton City and Desert Shores. Back in the mid-twentieth century, this stretch of shoreline buzzed with boaters, anglers, and vacationers drawn to a booming desert resort scene. Today, it has settled into a peaceful, rustic outpost surrounded by open desert, dramatic mountain backdrops, and the wide expanse of the inland sea.

Living here comes with a distinct set of desert realities. The Salton Sea sits over two hundred feet below sea level, and decades of receding water and rising salinity have shifted the local landscape. Ongoing state and regional restoration projects work to manage dust and protect wildlife habitats across the basin. For residents, daily life brings wide-open skies, starkly beautiful sunsets, and quiet neighborhoods, alongside intense summer heat and ongoing ecological changes along the drying lakebed.

Everyday routines are simple and unhurried. While the area retains historic boat launches and nearby shoreline recreation spots, most errands, groceries, and medical services require a drive up Highway 86 to Salton City or farther out to the Coachella Valley and El Centro. It primarily appeals to people looking for affordable desert living, plenty of open space, and an off-the-beaten-path lifestyle away from crowded coastal cities.
