About Sam Rayburn

Sam Rayburn is a Jasper County community on the south shore of the Sam Rayburn Reservoir, where Texas Recreational Road 255 meets Farm to Market Road 1007. The 2020 Census counted 1,273 residents. The community's name points to the lake and to the longtime Texas congressman for whom the reservoir was named, while the surrounding roads connect the CDP with Brookeland, Jasper, and the larger recreation area.

Water is the organizing fact here. The reservoir has more than 750 miles of shoreline, and the area's businesses, marinas, fishing access, and cabins serve people moving between the lake and Jasper County's pine country. The reservoir's broad reach keeps lake access central to the area's geography. Education follows the CDP's boundary: one portion lies in Brookeland Independent School District and another in Jasper Independent School District. That split is a useful clue to the place itself—a lake community spread along a broad shore, with daily errands and school connections reaching into neighboring communities across the reservoir.
