San Anselmo, CA

On Friday and Saturday evenings from June 20 through September 12, 2026, except July 4, San Anselmo Avenue closes through downtown for Live on the Avenue. Free music and programming fill the old commercial corridor, and monthly historical walks leave nearby Creek Park to trace the Hub, local architecture, and the former railroad. The 2026 lineup also includes movie nights in Creek Park and themed activities in Imagination Park, extending the series beyond its music stages. These gatherings fit the town’s physical form unusually well. Shops and civic spaces cluster where San Anselmo Creek meets the old junction, while residential streets rise into wooded hills on both sides. The center is compact, and its street, creek, and former rail alignment give community gatherings a clear location.

That junction predates the town. Coast Miwok communities used the surrounding hills and San Anselmo Creek long before Mexican land grants divided the valley. The North Pacific Coast Railroad completed its Sausalito-to-San Rafael section through the site in 1874, then branched west toward Tomales and the Sonoma timberlands. Maps called the stop Junction until railroad officials adopted San Anselmo in 1883. The San Francisco Theological Seminary opened on the hillside in 1892, giving the settlement an institution of its own. After the 1906 earthquake, many summer houses became permanent homes, and incorporation passed by a close 83–79 vote in 1907. Passenger trains ended in 1941; the tracks were removed, and portions of the right-of-way became part of the road network, including the later Miracle Mile toward San Rafael.

Water is equally important to understanding the address map. San Anselmo lies within the Ross Valley watershed, and the creek passes directly through downtown before continuing toward the bay. Creek Park gives residents access to that channel, while flood management remains an active municipal responsibility. The town’s Flood Committee, established in 2006, evaluates hydrologic conditions and approaches that include flood gates, home elevations, creek cleaning, and low-impact development. Exposure varies among hillsides, valley floors, tributaries, and individual parcel elevations. For a prospective homeowner near the creek or another drainage route, the town’s flood maps and parcel elevation give a more specific picture than the downtown waterway alone.

The seminary hillside still contributes to present-day institutional life. San Francisco Theological Seminary is housed at the University of Redlands Marin campus, where the Presidio Center also runs graduate business and public-administration programs through online study and residency weekends. At street level, Creek Park hosts events, Memorial Park supplies the town’s most developed recreation grounds, and the Historical Museum opens on Saturdays on the first floor of the Carnegie library near downtown. Imagination Park adds a film-history detail. Its life-size Yoda and Indiana Jones figures commemorate George Lucas’s creative connection to San Anselmo. Beside the former railroad junction, those characters share a few downtown blocks with creek access, local shops, historical walks, and a theological campus that has occupied the hillside since the nineteenth century.
