San Augustine is the seat of San Augustine County, with a downtown that still reads as an early Texas town rather than a modern subdivision. The community was organized in 1832 on an American grid, while nearby Mission Dolores preserves a much older Spanish and Indigenous story: the mission was built in 1721 and operated along the route near the Texas-Louisiana border.
