About San Fernando

San Fernando is an independently governed city entirely surrounded by Los Angeles in the San Fernando Valley. Before Spanish missionaries and soldiers arrived, the area lay within northwestern Tovaangar, the Tongva homelands; nearby Pasheeknga was then the valley’s most populous Tongva village, with Tataviam homelands to the north and Chumash territory to the west. The 2020 census counted 23,946 San Fernando residents. City events include Día de los Muertos observances and classes in “Aztec” and Folklórico dance. San Fernando also has an ulama de cadera team, Oceyolotl de San Fernando Valley. The Antelope Valley Metrolink line parallels San Fernando Boulevard, and the city operates its own fixed-route trolley service.
