San Ildefonso Pueblo, NM

San Ildefonso Pueblo, known in Tewa as P'ohwhogeh Owingeh, sits in a quiet river valley about 24 miles northwest of Santa Fe. Located along the banks of the Rio Grande right below the dark basalt cliffs of Black Mesa, the pueblo has been home to Tewa-speaking families since the early 1300s. It functions as an independent, self-governing tribal nation, managing its own community affairs and taking care of the surrounding high-desert landscape.

The pueblo is famous for its elegant black-on-black pottery, an art form popularized in the early twentieth century by Maria and Julian Martinez and continued by generations of local makers. Community life centers around deep traditions, including the annual January 23 Feast Day, which welcomes respectful visitors to witness traditional dances. For daily amenities, children attend Pojoaque Valley schools, while short drives to Los Alamos and Santa Fe provide straightforward access to jobs, dining, and healthcare.
