San Martin's rail service is peak-focused, while its principal bus route runs throughout the week. The current Caltrain timetable gives the station four northbound and four southbound weekday peak-period stops, while VTA Route 68 runs daily along Monterey Road between Gilroy Transit Center and San Jose Diridon. East of the community, Coyote Lake-Harvey Bear Ranch County Park covers 4,448 acres from the valley floor into the hills. Its Harvey Bear and Mendoza entrances charge no vehicle-entry fee and lead to hiking, bicycling, equestrian, and picnic areas; the Coyote Lake side adds camping, fishing, and boating, though swimming is prohibited. San Martin Airport supplies another distinctive public facility. Santa Clara County opened it in 1972 and renamed it in 2014. Beside the airfield, the nonprofit Wings of History museum opens on Tuesdays and Saturdays with historic aircraft, engines, models, restoration shops, aviation exhibits, and a research library. San Martin recorded 7,008 residents in the 2020 census.

Median household income was $158,250, and workers' mean travel time was 34.1 minutes. San Martin is unincorporated: county agencies run the park and airport, regional agencies provide bus and weekday rail connections, and the museum operates independently. That service pattern makes the automobile important while still preserving practical options for peak commuting, daily bus travel, outdoor recreation, and local aviation programs.
