Sanbornville, NH

Sanbornville is the primary village in Wakefield, New Hampshire, set at the outlet of Lovell Lake. The CDP had 963 residents in 2020, and New Hampshire Route 16 forms its western edge, running north to Ossipee and south toward Rochester. Lovell Lake forms the eastern edge, so the village is organized between a state highway and a broad lake outlet, with Wakefield village just to the north and Union to the south.

The water and railroad once made Sanbornville an important shipping place. Ice companies harvested roughly 1,000 feet of Lovell Lake frontage and sent 16 to 20 train carloads a day toward Boston; a rail yard fire in 1911 helped end that era, and Route 16 later moved to the village’s western side. Now the old town hall, village stores, lake homes, and highway traffic sit on top of that history. Sanbornville’s defining local detail is the outlet itself: the water leaves Lovell Lake here, beside the road that carries people through Wakefield.
