Sand Lake, MI (CDP)

Sand Lake is a Kent County community in Nelson Township, named for the lake at its center and tied to Tri County Area Schools. Its recent history has a practical wrinkle: in 2009, some residents pushed for a vote on disincorporation after Sand Lake recorded the highest tax rates among Kent County’s five villages. The school district tells a similar story of change, forming from the Sand Lake and Howard City boards. Sand Lake sits in the Grand Rapids area, but its local character is written in smaller things—lake water, village-government questions, and a school system reshaped by consolidation.
