About Sand Point
Sand Point sits on northwestern Popof Island near the entrance to the Bering Sea and serves as the seat of the Aleutians East Borough. A San Francisco fishing company established it in 1898 as a cod station and trading post, with Aleut families and Scandinavian fishermen among the early residents. Fishing still sets the town's working geography: Sand Point has the largest commercial fishing fleet in the Aleutian region, and Trident Seafoods operates a fish-processing plant there. The city maintains the Robert E. Galovin Small Boat Harbor, while the Aleutians East Borough School District runs the community's Pre-K through 12 school. The seasonal M/V Tustumena ferry gives this island port another link to the rest of the chain.
