Sandusky, IA

Sandusky is a Lee County census-designated place on the west bank of the Mississippi River, about four miles north of Keokuk and six miles south of Montrose. The community grew in the 1800s and was first listed as a CDP before the 2020 census, which counted 297 residents. It sits in a stretch of southeast Iowa where river bottoms, farm roads, and the larger county-seat routines of Keokuk meet. Its compact footprint includes a substantial share of water along the river, so the town’s map feels tied to the shoreline as much as to the road.

Sandusky United Methodist Church has a congregation dating to 1872 and remains on Mississippi River Road. Lee County’s history places Sandusky among the small settlements that still cling to their historic names even after shrinking into clusters of homes. Keokuk handles much of the area’s shopping, schools, and county business, while Montrose is just up the river. For a newcomer, Sandusky is a river-edge community instead of an independent downtown: its identity comes from the Mississippi, the long agricultural road between Keokuk and Montrose, and the old church that gives the place a recognizable center.
