Sanger, CA

Sanger is a relaxed agricultural town sitting about fifteen miles east of Fresno, nestled right where the valley floor begins to meet the Sierra Nevada foothills. It got its start in the late 1880s as a railroad stop and timber hub, where lumber flumed down from the mountains met valley crops along the Southern Pacific tracks. The historic depot still stands downtown as a local museum, anchoring the city's roots. Today, Sanger is home to around 27,000 people. Sanger's most beloved tradition is its official title as the Nation's Christmas Tree City. In the 1920s, town leaders adopted the massive General Grant sequoia in nearby Kings Canyon National Park as a national holiday symbol. That tradition continues every December with the Trek to the Tree, where buses carry residents up into the mountains for caroling and a special ceremony beneath the giant sequoia.
