About Santa Rosa

Santa Rosa is Guadalupe County’s seat on the Pecos River, a New Mexico town with several names layered into its history. The first Euro-American settlement here was Agua Negra Chiquita, ‘Little Black Water,’ in 1865; the name shifted to Santa Rosa in 1890 after a chapel tied to Celso Baca’s mother and Saint Rose of Lima. The railroad arrived in 1901, Route 66 followed in 1926, and Blue Hole gave the town a spring-fed landmark. Santa Rosa is a road town with a chapel name and a blue pool beneath it.
