Saranac, MI

Saranac is an Ionia County village of 1,376 residents in the 2020 census where Lake Creek meets the Grand River. The river shaped the original settlement and later the movement of timber and farm products, while the village now serves as a retail and service center for the surrounding agricultural area. Saranac sits about half a mile off M-21, with I-96 roughly three and a half miles south and Grand Rapids and Lansing connected through the regional highway network. The old railroad corridor running parallel to the river is now part of the Fred Meijer Grand River Valley Trail, giving the village a direct link to the river valley's walking and biking network.

Saranac's village office, business section, parks, and trail access all fit within a small geography shaped by the Grand River. The local scoop is a working service village where the waterway that once moved timber and crops still sets the orientation, even though highways and a trail now carry much of the movement.
