Sardis, AR

Sardis is a census-designated place and unincorporated community in Saline County's Hurricane Township, about twelve miles east of Benton. The 2020 census first listed it as a CDP with 833 residents. Hurricane Creek runs about a mile west, and nearby Bauxite and East End give the community its regional bearings. Sardis grew around a church rather than a formal town center: the first Sardis Methodist Church South was built in 1869 on land donated by Grandmother Roark, and the community took its name from that congregation.

Church history is still the strongest local thread. Sardis Campground opened in 1884 for annual revivals, the Methodist congregation rebuilt after a 1917 fire, and the present Sardis United Methodist Church grew through later mergers and additions. Baptist and Methodist traditions shaped the community side by side, while bauxite mining brought new families and work to the area in the twentieth century. For a place without a city hall or downtown grid, Sardis has a clear center of gravity: Hogue and North Sardis Road, the church, the creek country, and the stories people carried through them. Even the old Shoe Tree—where residents hung shoes in memory of loved ones—belongs to that same local habit of marking the place together.
