Sausalito grew around waterborne connections long before the Golden Gate Bridge gave Marin County a direct road to San Francisco. Regular ferry service began in 1868, and the waterfront became Marin's principal port of entry as rail and ferry passengers changed modes there. Bridge traffic displaced much of that role after 1937, but World War II brought a different waterfront economy: Marinship built cargo ships and tankers on the northern shoreline. Today, Golden Gate Ferry still lands downtown, with scheduled trips to San Francisco taking about half an hour, while boatyards, marinas, floating homes, and a cooperative live-aboard community keep parts of the shore in daily use. Sausalito had 7,269 residents at the 2020 census, a small population beside the number of people who pass through the ferry landing and waterfront. The shoreline also supplies much of Sausalito's community activity. Gabrielson Park adjoins the ferry plaza, while nearby Dunphy Park has a waterfront lawn, bocce courts, sand volleyball, picnic areas, and a small beach.

Jazz and Blues by the Bay has brought free Friday concerts to Gabrielson Park since 1996, and the city's current calendar adds a Sunday farmers market and monthly Art & Harbor Days. Farther north, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers operates the free Bay Model Visitor Center, where a 1.5-acre working hydraulic model demonstrates tides and currents across San Francisco Bay and the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. The Spaulding Marine Storehouse and Boatworks preserves another practical side of maritime culture through a working boatyard, restoration projects, apprenticeships, sailing, and adult and youth classes. Those institutions make the waterfront more than scenery: it functions as a transit corridor, recreation space, classroom, workplace, and neighborhood. The city's completed ferry-plaza project, with a wider promenade and clearer bicycle and pedestrian paths, reinforced those overlapping uses in 2025.
