Saybrook, IL

Saybrook is a village in southeastern McLean County, Illinois, about 27 miles east of Bloomington and at the upper end of the Sangamon River. The 2020 census counted 654 people. The village was laid out in 1856, and the waterway here is modest—a small creek at this point—but it gives Saybrook its clearest geographic thread. The village sits in the Bloomington-Normal metropolitan orbit while keeping its own small-town grid and river crossing.

Railroad history supplies the other half of the map. The line that came through Saybrook later became part of the Lake Erie and Western, crossing the Sangamon and linking the village to the larger central Illinois network. The local name is believed to honor Old Saybrook, Connecticut, while the local nickname, “City of Shade and Water,” points to the village's own landscape. Farmer City is about 15 miles southwest and Gibson City about 10 miles northeast, so trips radiate along county roads as much as toward Bloomington. The local scoop is a compact McLean County village where a small river, an old rail crossing, and the Bloomington-Normal connection all meet.
