Scammon Bay, AK

Scammon Bay is a close-knit coastal village of around 600 residents tucked below the Askinuk Mountains in western Alaska, near where the Kun River reaches the Bering Sea. Because the community sits entirely off the road grid, daily life relies heavily on bush planes for travel and summer cargo barges for groceries and fuel. Subsistence traditions remain central to the local Yup'ik culture, with families heading out to seasonal fish camps for salmon and traveling across frozen tundra trails to Hooper Bay and Chevak by snowmachine in winter.
