About Schenectady

Schenectady sits on the Mohawk River where a 17th-century settlement, an Erie Canal corridor, and two centuries of industry overlap. The settlement dates to 1661 and received its city charter in 1798. Union College had been founded three years earlier. Edison Machine Works moved to Schenectady in 1887, General Electric established its headquarters in 1892, and American Locomotive Company plants became another defining industrial presence. Those layers remain visible in present-day community activity. Union College's 100-acre campus and eight-acre Jackson's Garden adjoin downtown. State Street's arts district is anchored by Proctors and miSci, while Mohawk Harbor provides public river access and a mixed-use waterfront on former industrial land. The Mohawk-Hudson Bike-Hike Trail passes through downtown and the Stockade as part of the Empire State Trail.

Its 1.5-mile ALCO Heritage Trail follows the south bank through the former locomotive-plant site, using 11 signs to interpret the history of a factory that operated there from 1847 to 1969. Away from the river, Central Park combines a playground, pool, and rose garden; in 2026, the city's pool program also offered free lessons at several locations. The county library system maintains the Johnson Main Library plus the Mont Pleasant, Phyllis Bornt Literacy Center, and Woodlawn branches in Schenectady, with free educational classes and a cultural-pass program. As of May 2026, CDTA's BusPlus Route 905 connected downtown Schenectady and downtown Albany seven days a week alongside several local and regional routes.
