Schenectady, NY

Known for generations as "The Electric City," Schenectady still holds onto its manufacturing roots. GE Vernova continues to run major energy and turbine operations here, carrying forward a lineage that helped power the country for more than a century. At the same time, the city offers much more than its industrial background. The city has roots stretching back to 1661, when it was founded as a Dutch settlement along the riverbank. You can still walk those early blocks in the Stockade Historic District, one of the oldest continuously inhabited neighborhoods in the country. Growth exploded in the late nineteenth century when Thomas Edison brought his machine works to town, soon followed by the American Locomotive Company. Those different eras give Schenectady its unique layout, rising from the colonial waterfront up to the commercial center and the stately grounds of Union College.

State Street anchors the local arts and dining scene. The historic Proctors Theatre draws major Broadway tours and concerts, surrounded by independent restaurants, bakeries, and casual spots to grab a drink. Families often spend weekends at the Museum of Innovation and Science exploring interactive technology exhibits and the planetarium. Right next to downtown, the Union College campus adds student energy to the neighborhood, along with Jackson's Garden, a quiet eight-acre botanical retreat open to visitors.

Getting outside is easy, especially along the riverfront. The Mohawk Harbor area combines marina views and waterfront patios with direct access to the Mohawk-Hudson Bike-Hike Trail, which connects cyclists and joggers across the entire Capital Region. Inland, Central Park offers a famous rose garden, sports courts, an outdoor pool, and summer concerts. With quick highway connections and reliable bus transit into Albany, Troy, and Saratoga Springs, Schenectady makes a convenient and budget-friendly home base.
