Scotts Valley, CA

State Route 17 drops from the Santa Cruz Mountains into Scotts Valley before continuing to the coast, making the city both a mountain community and a waypoint between San Jose and Santa Cruz. That role predates the highway: the settlement once served travelers on the stagecoach route across the mountains. Scotts Valley incorporated in 1966 and had 12,224 residents in 2020. Census estimates for 2020–2024 put the owner-occupancy rate at 73.6 percent and the median value of owner-occupied homes at $1,105,700. The Highway 17 Express offers an alternative to driving, stopping at Scotts Valley's Cavallaro Transit Center on trips between downtown Santa Cruz and San Jose Diridon Station. Current schedules include early-morning, daytime, evening, and weekend service, although not every trip stops in Scotts Valley. Outdoor space begins inside the city rather than only in the surrounding state parks. Skypark combines soccer fields, tennis and pickleball courts, a skatepark, pump track, dog parks, playgrounds, picnic areas, exercise equipment, and a linear walking and cycling trail.

Its 2026 event calendar included the city's 60th-anniversary celebration. The protected Glenwood Open Space Preserves contain more than seven miles of public trails across grassland, redwood, oak, riparian, and wetland habitat, with access rules designed around sensitive species and grazing. Lodato Park adds a 1.5-mile forest trail through redwoods, bay trees, and firs. Just beyond the city, Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park offers 30 miles of hiking routes and a short loop through an old-growth grove, extending the nearby trail network from neighborhood walks to longer outings. Scotts Valley Branch Library provides a different kind of regional resource: it houses Santa Cruz Public Libraries' Special Needs Resource Center, a countywide collection for individuals, families, and educators.
