Scottsville, VA

Scottsville is a small town split between Albemarle and Fluvanna counties at a horseshoe bend in the James River. The 2020 census counted 522 residents. The town began as a natural crossing and grew into a river and canal port: bateaux carried farm goods toward Richmond, the James River and Kanawha Canal opened in 1840, and Scottsville was incorporated in 1818. Roads and the river now share the work that ferries and canal boats once handled, but downtown still faces the water like it knows where the town came from.

Canal Basin Square interprets the town's transportation history, Levee Walk follows the river edge, and the Scottsville Museum in a former 1846 church covers river trade, Civil War history, school life, and neighborhood stories. A public boat launch sits just off Main Street, while Hatton Ferry, five miles west, keeps a poled James River crossing in the local orbit. Add the farmers market, river outfitters, and summer events, and Scottsville feels like a place where history is not behind glass. It is still in the water, the streets, and the way people use downtown.
