About Seadrift

Seadrift is a Calhoun County city on the northeastern shore of San Antonio Bay, southwest of Port Lavaca. The place grew as a fishing and shipping point after the Civil War, and the post office has been operating since 1891. A 1911 town-site promotion paired city lots with five-acre farm plots, followed by a canning factory and ice factory in 1913. That growth was cut short by the 1919 hurricane, which damaged the town and ended passenger-train service. Later chapters include Vietnamese refugee families, crab picking, and the harbor trade that still gives Seadrift its coastal character. Seadrift School serves students through eighth grade, with older students in Calhoun County ISD.
