Searsport, ME

Searsport is an incorporated town and deep-water seaport on the Penobscot River estuary and Penobscot Bay, just northwest of Sears Island. The 2020 census counted 2,649 residents. Settled in the 1760s and incorporated in 1845, the town built its reputation through shipyards, coastal trade, and a remarkable run of sea captains. The Penobscot Marine Museum keeps that maritime past close, with historic buildings, ship stories, and a large Searsport sea-captain collection. The old harbor economy still shapes how Searsport feels on the ground. Main Street, the museum district, historic captain's homes, shipyard sites, and the water all sit in the same local frame.

Sears Island adds another piece of the Penobscot Bay map, while Belfast is close by for larger errands. Searsport is a Maine coastal town where the sea is not just scenery: it is the reason the town grew, the origin of its famous surnames, and the thread running through nearly every old building. The harbor is still the town's quickest way to read the place.
