Sebewaing, MI

Sebewaing is a Huron County village that made sugar beets part of its everyday map. Founded in 1845, it sits in Michigan’s Thumb within Sebewaing Township, and the local sugar industry has been tied to the village since the Sebewaing Sugar Company began operating in the early 20th century. In 1906, Sebewaing Sugar joined five other local companies to form Michigan Sugar Company. The factory and surrounding beet fields made Sebewaing one of the places where Michigan’s sugar industry became visible in daily work.

That connection still runs through the calendar. In 2026, the Michigan Sugar Festival is June 19–21, with Moonlight Madness on October 1 and the Spirit of Christmas Festival on November 21. Unionville-Sebewaing Area Schools links the village to its neighboring community, and Sebewaing’s airport history carries a stranger local detail: it once had Michigan’s only airport with both land-plane and seaplane facilities, where seaplanes could taxi to the pumps.
