Secaucus, NJ

Secaucus Junction makes this Meadowlands town one of northern New Jersey’s major transfer points. The station is one stop from New York Penn and is served by every NJ Transit rail line except the Atlantic City Line; special trains also connect it with major events at the Meadowlands Sports Complex. Yet Secaucus is not simply a rail interchange. The Hackensack River borders its western side, wetlands occupy substantial ground among the turnpike, warehouses, retail districts, and residential neighborhoods, and the town recorded 22,181 residents in the 2020 census. Town historical materials document an earlier landscape of celery fields, orchid growing, and pig farms, remnants of an agricultural economy that preceded the modern transportation and commercial corridors. The wetlands are accessible enough to be part of ordinary recreation. The one-mile Mill Creek Marsh Trail crosses a 209-acre natural area restored in 1998 by removing invasive reeds, reestablishing tidal flow, and planting native species.

Ancient white-cedar stumps emerge at low water and now serve as perches for egrets and shorebirds. At county-run Laurel Hill Park, residents can walk the Hackensack riverfront, launch a canoe or kayak, fish from public piers, use multipurpose fields, or play on Hudson County’s only lighted synthetic cricket field. The town operates morning and evening community shuttles between residential stops and Secaucus Junction, making the rail network usable without first driving to the station. Buchmuller Park supplies a more traditional civic gathering place: Secaucus’s 2026 schedule put most summer concerts in its amphitheater, while family movies used the town ice rink. The Secaucus Public Library maintains both a main building on Paterson Plank Road and an annex at XChange near the junction, with meeting and study rooms, language and adult-learning resources, museum passes, digital lending, and children’s programming.
