About Security-Widefield
Fontaine Boulevard divides the two communities combined in Security-Widefield: local convention places Security northwest of the road and Widefield along its northern and southeastern sections near Fountain. The El Paso County census-designated place belongs to the Colorado Springs metropolitan area and the Front Range Urban Corridor; it had 38,639 residents in 2020. Security and Widefield are historically associated with their separate water towers, and their water and sanitation districts serve different portions of the CDP. Wilson Elementary School, built from 1959 to 1961, entered the National Register of Historic Places in 2017. Widefield was also the site of the March 1991 crash of United Airlines Flight 585, which killed all 25 people aboard; investigators later attributed the crash to a defect in the Boeing 737-200’s rudder power-control-unit design.
