Sedgwick, KS

Sedgwick is a city split between Harvey and Sedgwick counties, with the city center on the Harvey County side. It was incorporated in 1872 and was the first city incorporated in Harvey County; rail service helped it become a local shipping and trading point. The county line is a practical part of the address, but it does not erase the town's shared civic map.

That map includes USD 439, the Lillian Tear Library, city parks, and a recreation commission jointly appointed by the City Council and school board. The city took ownership of two ponds on the northeast side in 2022, and Public Works maintains municipal park lands. The recreation commission offers youth athletic leagues and operates a community fitness facility. City-owned ponds are stocked through the Kansas Department of Wildlife, while the library serves Sedgwick and nearby rural residents. Sedgwick is a place where county boundaries, school arrangements, and city recreation all meet in a few blocks of south-central Kansas.
