Seelyville, IN

Seelyville grew from a property line and a railroad stop. Moddisett laid out the town north of Jonas Seely's land, and when the Terre Haute and Eastern Railroad built along the south side, Seely became the station master. The stop first carried his name, then became Seelyville, leaving the railroad in the town's origin while U.S. 40 supplies the current road cue. That small shift in name is the reason the town's history feels tied to one person and one piece of transportation infrastructure.

Today Seelyville sits in Lost Creek Township east of Terre Haute, within the Terre Haute metropolitan area. Vigo County School Corporation schools connect local students to Lost Creek Consolidated Elementary, Woodrow Wilson Middle, and Terre Haute North Vigo High School. The town's present shape is easy to picture from those lines: a residential community tied to Terre Haute by U.S. 40, with a school route and an old rail corridor running through its story. Seelyville's local clue is the name itself, preserved from the man who served as the whistle-stop station master.
