Seiling, OK

Seiling is a Dewey County city immediately south of the North Canadian River and about seven miles north of the South Canadian River. Louis Seiling's store and homestead gave the town its name after the 1892 Cheyenne-Arapaho land opening; the earlier town company had called the place Hobson. Seiling incorporated in 1909 and grew as an agricultural center even though the nearest railroad depot was more than twenty-five miles away. Its position between the two Canadian rivers made the town a practical meeting point for surrounding farms.

Today Seiling calls itself the Crossroads of Northwest Oklahoma, a name that fits the highway network through town. Murray Park, the municipal pool, a nine-hole golf course, and the public library give residents everyday gathering and recreation spots, while Seiling Public Schools and the local hospital support a much larger rural area than the city limits alone suggest. Canton Lake and Little Sahara State Park widen the weekend map beyond town. Seiling remains a highway and service center whose river crossings, farm routes, and civic facilities grew from the same geographic middle ground.
