Selma, IN

Selma is a town in Liberty Township, Delaware County, Indiana, on State Road 32 just east of Muncie. The 2020 census counted 747 residents. The road runs along the town’s northern edge, while the old railroad alignment marks the reason Selma grew where it did. The town is part of the Muncie metropolitan area, with farm roads and regional trips meeting the highway at a small Delaware County center. The town’s streets still face that older line.

Selma was platted in 1852 when the railroad reached the site, and its post office followed in 1853. A high school built in 1904 later served as a middle school before being demolished in 1976, leaving the school building’s chapter in local memory. Selma’s story is tied to movement: first the railroad, then State Road 32, and now the daily routes into Muncie and neighboring towns. It remains a small Indiana town with a rail-era beginning and a clear place on the road.
