Sereno del Mar, CA

Sereno del Mar is a small Sonoma County coastal community along the Highway 1 corridor, north of Bodega Bay and near Salmon Creek. Its name — Spanish for “serene of the sea” — fits the way the place is read from the road: a handful of homes and side streets held between coastal hills and the Pacific. The CDP sits at about 190 feet above sea level, close enough to the shoreline that weather, fog, and the shape of the bluffs are part of the everyday setting. In the 2020 census, 107 residents were counted.

Sereno del Mar belongs to a string of Sonoma Coast communities that includes Carmet, Salmon Creek, Valley Ford, and Bodega Bay. The area has a rural-residential feel, with limited services spread along the coast and water supplied through the local Sereno del Mar Water Company. Children are served by Shoreline Unified School District, whose reach follows the coast from West Marin north toward the Russian River. There is no downtown to pull the place inward; its identity comes from the coastline itself, the highway, and the small collection of homes facing a broad and changeable Pacific landscape.
