About Severn

Severn is a town in Northampton County, North Carolina, United States. The 2020 census counted 191 residents. Severn is part of the Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina Micropolitan Statistical Area. Severn is the home of Severn Peanut Corporation, the owners of the Hampton Farms brand of roasted peanuts. That mix gives Severn a clear local shape within North Carolina, with older layers still visible in current places. The local scoop is a place whose streets, landmarks, and institutions keep its earlier story close to the present. The community was settled in about 1833 and named Meherrin after a local Native American tribe. In 1887 a branch rail line was built through Meherrin.
