Seward, AK

Seward sits on the shores of Resurrection Bay on the Kenai Peninsula, about a two-hour drive south of Anchorage along the Seward Highway. With roughly 2,700 full-time residents, it is a compact harbor town surrounded by steep mountain peaks and ocean water. Summer brings a massive rush of visitors, cruise ships, and charter boats heading out toward Kenai Fjords National Park, while the colder months bring a much quieter, tight-knit community pace.

Year-round living centers around the working boat harbor, commercial fishing, tourism, and essential employers like the regional hospital and the state vocational college. Families have access to dedicated elementary, middle, and high schools right in town, along with a public library and local clinics. Anyone moving here needs to prepare for wet coastal weather, heavy winter snow, and the occasional mountain pass closure on the drive north, but the reward is easy access to hiking trails, fishing, and everyday wildlife.
