About Shaktoolik
Shaktoolik is a small coastal city in the Nome Census Area, Alaska, located along the eastern shore of Norton Sound. With a population of about two hundred residents, the community relies heavily on a subsistence-based economy supplemented by seasonal wage earnings. The village was originally located six miles up the Shaktoolik River before moving to its current spit site. Today, it is recognized as one of several Alaskan coastal communities threatened by severe erosion, and it is served by the Shaktolik School within the Bering Strait School District.
