Sharon Springs, NY

Sharon Springs is a Schoharie County village whose streets were built around mineral water. Spa development began about 1825, drawing summer visitors to bathhouses, hotels, boardinghouses, theaters, and a casino; the village later became a refuge for Jewish survivors of the Holocaust. The historic district still holds that layered architecture, with Greek Revival, Italianate, Queen Anne, and other houses alongside old bath structures on Main Street. You can understand the place by walking a few blocks: the springs, hotels, and public buildings are close enough to read as one story.

On Main Street, the American Hotel, Klinkhart Hall, Roseboro Hotel, and former bathhouses give the village its current landmarks. The Sharon Historical Museum complex adds a one-room schoolhouse built before 1854, moved to the grounds in 1989, alongside a barn, outhouse, tombstone exhibit, and early-1900s rooms. The local read is an old spa village still carrying the evidence of its hotels and waters, with history close enough to be part of an ordinary walk.
