Sharpsburg, MD

Sharpsburg is a Washington County town built around a spring, a canal, and the battlefield that carries its other name. Joseph Chapline laid out Sharps Burgh in 1763 beside a “great spring” used by Native Americans, travelers, and early settlers. The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal reached town around 1836, giving residents canal work and tying Main Street to a larger movement of goods. That transportation role sits under the Civil War story: the Battle of Antietam, called the Battle of Sharpsburg by the Confederate army, began nearby on September 17, 1862.

Today, Antietam National Battlefield and the town's historic buildings share the same geography. The Lee War Council Building on West Main Street recalls the night after the battle, and Sharpsburg's Memorial Day parade traces its roots to the 1860s. Commercial activity is limited; local life still runs through the residential streets, Town Hall and library on East Main, and the steady pull of battlefield visitors. Sharpsburg feels less like a place with a battlefield nearby than a town whose spring, canal, Main Street, and Civil War memory all occupy the same small map.
