Sharpsburg, PA

Sharpsburg is an Allegheny River borough about five miles northeast of downtown Pittsburgh. The 2020 census counted 3,187 residents. Its old industrial map included rolling mills, foundries, machine shops, and the canal that ran through the borough before the rail era took over. H.J. Heinz got its start here in 1869, when the company began as Heinz Noble & Company, giving a very small river town an outsized place in food-industry history. The river is still the front door. Today the riverfront is more about people and public space.

James Sharp Landing has boat and kayak launches, a fishing pier, and room for community events, while the library's raised-bed garden adds another neighborhood gathering spot. Main Street runs between older houses, newer shops, and the river corridor, with Pittsburgh close enough for work, sports, and errands. Sharpsburg is a former factory town that still wears the river well: Heinz, the canal, the railroad, and a landing where locals can get right to the water.
