Shawnee, OK

Shawnee is the county seat of Pottawatomie County, east of Oklahoma City. Its location was shaped by cattle trails through Indian Territory in the 1870s, part of the movement of Texas herds toward rail and markets. The city later became a regional center with colleges, churches, and county services. Shawnee has also dealt with the broader economic shifts of small-city Oklahoma, but it retains a strong civic role: courthouse, schools, local businesses, and a recognizable downtown east of the metro.
