About Sheffield

Sheffield is a Franklin County city that began with a railroad founder's plan. C.C. Gilman, who owned the Eldora Railroad and Coal Company, platted the town in 1874, and Sheffield incorporated in 1876. The 2020 census counted 1,130 residents. That origin still shows up in the city's map: Gilman Street leads toward the Path of Progress, a paved trail running south toward Chapin. City Park and the library sit within the same everyday circuit, so the old railroad story meets current public space.

West Fork Community School District's middle and high school campus is on West Park Street in Sheffield; the elementary campus is in Rockwell, a result of the 2011 district merger. Sheffield Public Library, City Park, Marie Ayers Park and its seasonal pool, and Galvin's Park Campground add civic and recreational stops. The Path of Progress gives the city a direct walking and biking link to Chapin, so the school and park network reaches beyond Sheffield's street grid.
