Sheffield, IL

Sheffield is a village in Bureau County, set in north-central Illinois farm country. The 2020 census counted 821 residents. Joseph E. Sheffield and Henry Farnam founded the town in 1852 around the Chicago and Rock Island Railroad, with the site intended to serve as a coaling station for trains. Bureau Valley Community Unit School District 340 serves the village, while the old rail corridor still shapes the street pattern and the town square.

Sheffield grew from the railroad and the coal beneath the surrounding prairie. A monument to Joseph Sheffield and the Rock Island Railroad stands in the square, and the village's Danish Lutheran church is among the oldest of its kind in the United States. The Sheffield House was built in 1852 to receive people arriving by train and stage, giving the new town a hotel before it had much else. Sheffield remains a small Bureau County place with a railroad beginning, a church tradition, and a town center built around the traffic that once stopped for coal.
